Overwhelming Boyle

Susan Boyle rose to fame. We all loved her and cheered her on. But why oh why does the media keep beating the story into the ground? Yes, she graciously lost. Yes, the pressure of international stardom got to her. And what should we do about it? I say, leave her be.

The media continues to analyze her "situation" and in truth they're continuing to bombard her with attention in some capacity.

Dr. Drew noted on Larry King last night that certainly Boyle will do well, with a career and will grow accustomed to the stresses of being in the spotlight. But it's important to remember, he continued- that everyone who goes on reality TV shows should be able to have access to care or treatment or council to get through the stress that a sudden stardom puts on you.

I do think that Miss Boyle is beautiful woman. She brought tears to my eyes. She dreamed all her life of doing something that no one thought she could do. She fulfilled her mother's wish of singing in front of thousands (and in this case millions). She will do well. But she was overwhelmed.

I wish her all the best. Recently Elaine Page (Boyle's icon) said she had invited the BGT singer on her radio show. I'm sure that once she's ready, Susan Boyle will gladly accept.

Love on the Brain, Part II

Just short of a month ago, I wrote a blog discussing love and brain chemistry. This week, in lieu of Valentine's day, I am continuing my thoughts.

I recently read an article in Psychology Today discussing the importance of touch in a relationship. The article discussed that touch, particularly during a tense moment, can alleviate harsh feelings toward your significant other. The author, Sue Johnson, even noted that, "Once we do feel safely linked with our partner, we can tolerate the hurts they will- inevitably- inflict upon us..."

While the article,
Hold Me Tight, works through a number of mishandled conflicts of couples, it ultimately establishes that physical connection will essentially bring deep emotional connection. She rejects the idea that during conflict leaving the other person alone does any real good for the relationship. At one point, Johnson explains an example of a man, who is frustrated that making tea for the woman he loves, when she is afraid or timid, isn't enough, and rather, he ought to put his hand on her shoulder and draw her in- this will calm her that much more. She discusses the idea that couples who are in love are always touching. Johnson says that observing a couple reaching for one another is a tangible sign of their desire to love each other and connect in a way, that just maybe, they did not before.

Ironically, Dr. Gary Chapman, author of the Five Love Languages, lists Physical Touch as one of the five. The others include: Quality Time, Acts of Service, Gifts, and Words of Affirmation. He emphasizes that if we begin to love our significant other in their love language rather than our own, our chances of success change drastically.

Certainly all acts of love are important into establishing healthy relationships and maintaining them. It's important to learn about the psychological, emotional and even biological aspects of how we are treating the persons we love the most in our lives.

Your thoughts?

And from me to you- Happy Love Day!

Brains are Beautiful

I have read an article from Newsweek magazine about a group of girls who call themselves "Nerd Girls." I smiled when I read the article and even more when I watched a video about them. They pride themselves in pursuing technological careers while still wearing high heels and walking beautiful.

After a visit to the website, I am quite impressed with the self confidence these women exhibit. Each is a grad student or employee in the tech world- engineering, pharmaceuticals, aerospace etc. They hope they can inspire young women and girls to pride themselves on being smart. They also hope they can disband the stereotype of either "ugly-n-smart" or "sexy-n-stick to girly things." They embrace their femininity and they show the boys up. One girl stated, in the article, that just because she dressed to kill on Saturday didn't mean couldn't ace an engineering test on Monday.

They are comfortable in their skin and thrive on brains.

I would have to say that I take the Nerd Girl another step further. There is a generation of women who run the rough and rugged-earthy lifestyle. They read books, they like history, politics and take interest in social justice and the environment. And, damnit, we're sexy. We are the women that are pursuing business, the arts, the media and political status. These too, are often male-dominated professions. But these nerdy girls are ready to "...do it better and do it in heels."

Ambitious women, across the board, are persistent and strong and very often, not given the credit for their beauty. Conversely, beautiful women can often be mistaken as ditzy or dumb. These are the women that despise pretension and work hard for their rewards. But unfortunately, have often been subject to a stereotype that says it's "stupid" or bad to be a nerd (or geek). The young women that have initiated this movement have decided that they are proud of the title.

I know I am, are you?

A Cheer for the Girls

No matter what you may think about Hillary Clinton, you cannot deny that she made history, this year, in America. You may hate her politics, you may love them. You may believe she already ran the White House or perhaps she'd would do a better job than Bill. Whether you are for her or against her- you cannot make the mistake of denying the impact she has made in the United States and among women of all ages.

I give her enormous credit for pushing through and running for the first female spot as President. I have great respect for her inspiring move to rally and defy the status quo.

Barack Obama, in his Unity speech said that Clinton showed the country and the world that, "women can do anything that the boys can do, and do it better, and do it in heels."

"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it ... and the light is shining through like never before, filling us all with the hope and the sure knowledge that the path will be a little easier next time."-HRC

Not a single other woman will be able to fill the role that Hillary Clinton has. She has had a profound impact on women's rights, women's ability and achievements. She said in her concession speech that next time- it will be "unremarkable" for a woman to run for president, that it will become the norm and she's right. It is because she chose to step out and play the male dominated game of politics and claim herself eligible for one of the most powerful positions in the world.

Clinton may not have won the Democratic Nomination, but her stand was a loud one and women should be grateful for her contribution to the female future in the United States of America.

After Hillary Clinton's concession to Obama; I heard CNN's Candy Crowley state that, "Usually, victors make the history. But there are exceptions."

I could not agree more.
